Why You'll Love It?
He's been called the magician, mystic and even maniac of Carso and perhaps you need to be, to become of the best Fruilian producers. In his own words, Edi Kante describes himself as not being obsessed but "I'm just careful".
"The Carso is basically a land without a soil,” says Edi. Which is to say there is a limestone subsoil, but little topsoil. To create a vineyard, deeper soils have traditionally been dug up from near Trieste and trucked in, enough to provide about 80 centimeters depth of red earth. It can take up to 1,000 truckloads per hectare (2.47 acres) to fashion a vineyard — which should provide food for thought to anyone who’s witnessed a D5 in Wine Country or who wants to argue about terroir being defined by inherent soil types.
Kante is renowned as being an inventor and pioneer in his field, putting the Carso region back on the map by focusing on its regional varietals: Vitkosvka, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Terrano.
His 2012 Sauvignon Blanc is produced from vines that have an average age of 14 years. Now you wouldn't normally think to age Sauvignon Blancs, but some of the best Sancerres are a testament to the age worthy potential of SBs. Barrel aged for 12 months, with 6 months in stainless steel and bottles unfiltered. Really unique and special tasting Sauvignon Blanc that is expressive of its terroir.
