Max & Me is the private label of Phil and Sarah Lehmann born from a chance meeting between Sarah (ballet dancer) and Max (Phil’s dog) after a performance in the Barossa. And as the saying goes the rest is history. They produce small batch wines made with a terroir based philosophy.
Whilst many reference Phil’s winemaking heritage, being the youngest son of iconic winemaker Peter Lehmann, Phil’s own journey into winemaking was surprisingly not obvious from the start. He originally studied electrical engineering and did some vineyard work along the way (as you do as a uni student) and despite graduating with honours, he knew electrical engineering wasn’t for him. As he was figuring out his next steps, he did a vintage with Peter Scholz in Barossa, before getting a gig in Napa, which led to another opportunity in South Africa before his life changing moment working in Burgundy. Perhaps it was the French lifestyle or the world class Burgundian wines, but something struck a cord and it was then that Phil decided to pursue a life in wine.
Eden Valley has a long history of producing some of Australia’s greatest Rieslings. The 2017 Max & Me Riesling displays great regional characteristics. Well perfumed and intense flavours of lime, citrus, white flowers with well balanced soft acidity that’s not attacking or too austere. Light-medium weight palate with great texture and a long minerally crisp finish that’s just perfect with Thai food!
