Why you’ll love it:
Max & Me is the private label of Phil and Sarah Lehmann born from a chance meeting between Sarah (ballet dancer) and Max (Phil’s dog) after a performance in the Barossa. And as the saying goes the rest is history. They produce small batch wines made with a terroir based philosophy, creating wines with a deep sense of place. On their property, they have 10 hectares of vineyards (50% shiraz, 50% cabernet sauvignon). They have an organic approach to farming preferring to create an environment where nature's own biodiversity controls weeds and pests, rather than relying heavily on chemicals. "Sheep and cattle graze the vineyard grasses during winter, and European species of dung-beetles have been introduced to recycle the animal manure as fertiliser, improving the fertility, water retention and structure."
A combination of great fruit and deftness of the winemaker has allowed the fruit and regional characteristics to shine. The wines were aged in a combination of old and new French oak hogsheads and puncheons, resulting in very subtle vanillin oak flavours and a hint of smokiness. Intriguing aromas of blueberries, violets and Cypress incense on the nose. Blueberries, blackberries upon entry on the palate with floral accents rolling through the mid palate and hints of star anise, savoury smokiness and vanilla on the finish. Very fine tannins, well balanced acidity with plenty of length on the finish. A great Shiraz that will be even greater in years to come!
