Why You'll Love It?

Gallina is the most well-known geographic area of Neive. Its name likely comes from one or more families who resided in the area in the 1800s. Gallina is easily visible from the left side of the road as one ascends from the Baraccone plains to the town of Neive. The Rigo farmhouse is part of this vineyard’s territory, which sits at 180-210 MASL, fully south-facing. The soil is strongly characterized by light sand mixed with calcareous marl, which makes it loose and drought-prone in the summer. The sand and marl give incredible elegance and fineness to this Barbaresco.

The 2017 Barbaresco Gallina is soft, open-knit and quite pretty. Sweet spice, crushed flowers, cinnamon and macerated red cherry give the 2017 beguiling shades of nuance to match its mid-weight, translucent expression of Nebbiolo. Best of all, the Gallina will drink well right out of the gate. This is such a pretty and inviting Barbaresco. Drink 2021 – 2032. 92 points. Antonio Galloni, Vinous.

Antonio Galloni’s note above is a very accurate reflection of this wine. Compared to the Barolos of Oddero, this wine (being true to the appellation) treads a lighter path. It’s mid-weighted and pretty, with classic aromas of rose petal, dusty top-soil and dried raspberry. It’s attractive from the outset and has subtle hints of amaro-like botanicals at the back of the palate which I particularly enjoy. Most pleasing is that it seems ready to go, with the warm vintage resulting in a very approachable style of Barbaresco. – Ches Cook, FWC.
