Why you'll love it?

The Sangreal Vineyard is the oldest planting of the By Farr Estate. Planted in 1994 on a slope of red ironstone and limestone land. The rows run north to south, gaining full sun exposure throughout the day and resulting in prettier, more perfumed wines. It’s always the first vineyard to be harvested and is consistently made with 60 to 70% whole bunch and aged in new oak for 18 months. The wine is unfined and unfiltered in order to retain its natural flavour and bouquet. In Old French, san graal or san gréal means "Holy Grail" and sang réal means "royal blood". Fitting name for a wine that forms the backbone of the By Farr wines. Sangreal is the most seamless and perfumed of the three single-vineyard Pinots.

Each year the same descriptive notes come to mind for this wine, seductive, perfumed, seamless balance and moreish. It is a site that wavers very little in more difficult vintages and excels in the great ones. This is the back bone of Wine By Farr. Once again the alluring characters of this site combined with red fruits, whole bunch, acidity and oak have produced a beautifully interwoven expression of site and vintage. That’s what its all about for a near perfect vintage! (Winemaker's notes)

“Clones 114 and 115 planted ’94, believed to have mutated into a single ‘Sangreal’ clone, 66% whole bunches, 4 days cold soak, wild yeast open-fermented 8 days, matured in new French oak for 18 months. Deeply coloured, depth and savoury complexity the cornerstones of great pinots. Spices from an Arabian bazaar intermingle sinuously with vibrant berry fruits, a skein of refreshing acidity adding another dimension to a wine that continuously draws saliva from the mouth. It is already a complete wine, its future measured in decades, not years. 97 points.” James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2018
