Why You'll Love It?

Portuguese wine has come a long way since days of port. One man who’s spearheaded the revolution of Portuguese wine is Dirk Niepoort. The Niepoort is an old estate that was founded in 1842 by Dutch merchants who originally only made Port wines from grapes bought from various growers in Douro, but they never owned any Quintas themselves. This all changed when the 5th generation, Dirk Niepoort, took over the family estate. He decided to not only expand into making table wines but also bought their first quintas in order to grow and actually make wines himself. At a time where most people stuck to what they knew and what made them money - that is, port, it was a bold move by Dirk to experiment with table wines. But deep down he knew the potential this region was capable of and he wanted Portugal and Douro to be known first and foremost for their table wines. His very first experimental vintage in 1990, it was a monster of a wine called Robustus, a highly tannic, over extracted, big bold red. Most people thought he was crazy for making this undrinkable wine at the time. Even his father said it tasted like shit and sold most of it off whilst Dirk was in Australia. But he managed to save one barrel and bottled it for his son Daniel to drink when he was 18. Twenty years on and these wines were drinking beautifully and today Dirk Niepoort is known was one of Portugal’s most inventive and progressive winemakers producing internationally acclaimed wines and port.

The 2017 Redoma Reserva Branco displays a light, crystalline lemon colour. Its vivacious and mineral aromatic profile reflects the vines’ fantastic terroir. Complex aromas with hints of toast from the barrels complement the wine’s distinct floral and delicate character. Notes of spice, tropical fruits and white blossoms emerge to form a very complex and seductive ensemble. Tight and vibrant on the palate, with some body and a marked acidity, the wine offers plenty of elegance and depth. The finish is very long, with a final touch of smokiness and salinity. Much like its previous versions, this is a white wine which will greatly benefit from cellaring. Serve in Burgundy-style wine glass.
