Why You'll Love It?

Since 1945 Mouton Rothschild labels have featured a piece of artwork by a different contemporary artist. The 2005 label was created by the great Italian sculptor Giuseppe Penone. In his drawing for the label of Mouton Rothschild 2005, he has chosen to evoke the vine-grower’s “green fingers”, a living expansion of the vine leaf and at the same time the splayed hand of the drinker – soon to close round a glass of Mouton!

2005 has been heralded as one of the greatest vintages since 1945. When it comes to first growth Bordeaux's you can't surpass Mouton Rothschild for its ability to produce age worthy wines that are also approachable in their youth.  No other first growth Bordeaux offers this level of dichotomy. The vineyard is situated 27m above sea level with densely planted vines that are on average 44 years old.

Tastes Like?

The wine has an attractive colour, dark, deep and still very young, and an elegant, complex nose that combines refined notes of oak, toast and vanilla with intense, wild berry fruit. Touches of mint and spice complete the array, bringing freshness and originality.

The palate is both powerful and substantial, revealing attractively close-knit, juicy and succulent tannins combined with concentrated blackcurrant and blackberry flavours that reinforce the impression of fullness of flavour.

The finish is very long, carried by a touch of sweetness and the perfect expression of rich, ripe Cabernet Sauvignon typical of great Pauillac vintages.

What the critics say

The 2005 Mouton Rothschild is exceptional. Dark, powerful and explosive on the palate, the 2005 is endowed with magnificent depth and richness. Just at the early part of its drinking window, the 2005 is sure to drink well for many years from here, especially if it is given a little bit of air. The 2005 is a stunning Mouton, but it needs time to fully blossom. Antonio Galloni

The 2005 Mouton Rothschild has a sensational nose of crème de cassis and incense as well as a touch of lead pencil shavings and forest floor. Dense purple, this is one of the biggest, richest wines I tasted from the Médoc. It is full-bodied, pure, and impressively endowed. Certainly the selection process and the vineyard have come through in admirable form. This wine has a certain accessibility due to the sweetness of the tannin, but it is multidimensional, with a majestic mouthfeel and length. Drink it over the next 30+ years. 97 points Robert M. This accelerates on the palate with incredibly ripe tannins and finesse. Full body, roasted fruit, leather and grilled meat. Dried flowers, too. It shows superb tannin backbone and polish. Tight and youthful. Just starting to open. Currant and berry undertones with lead pencil are impressive. Better in 2018 but so delicious now. 98 points James Suckling
