This wine's rare and powerful style is derived from the special “Keuper” marl-limestone soils on which it is grown. Produced from old vines from the former wine estate of the Lords of Ribeaupierre, the grapes are selected and harvested at the peak of their ripeness. This wine is not produced every year, but only when the Trimbach Family believes that the quality is high enough. The grapes used are left to ripen very late, thus acquiring concentration and complexity, and bunches are individually hand harvested.

Tastes Like?

Colour golden with tremendous fragrance of honey and wild flowers. It is produced by bottling wine before it has completed fermentation made without added sugars or yeast. Often made just a few months after harvest, the resulting wines actually taste like a grape! What used to be known as Sparkling Burgundy until the term was banned, Sparkling Shiraz has been produced in Australia since 1881! It’s a great tribute to the sparkling burgundies Rockford winemaker Robert O’Callaghan encountered when he worked for Seppelt in the 1970s. The base wine is matured in large old wood for three years before being tiraged, and then left on lees for a year before disgorgement and further cellaring prior to release. With its unique combination of soft tannins, delicate beads, ripe, juicy black fruits and hint of sweetness, a good sparkling red is the perfect match for dishes that might overwhelm a still, dry red. Shoot thinning, suckering and crop paring are all integral parts of the annual cycle with an ideal to farm as simply as possible, resulting in the harvest of healthy fruit early in the season that requires no additions or adjustments and little intervention. Fraser is also a fan of early picking for structure, purity/fruit brightness –“I like a lot of crunch.” Unlike most Ebeneezer red, Sami-Odi wines tend to be less "sweet" per se with more bones and less flesh due to the winemaking style.

The grapes are hand-sorted, whole clusters are gently pigeaged by foot prior to basket pressing into Burgundian Pièces where they complete both their primary and malolactic fermentations. Beaucastel is one of the region's oldest and most well known estates established in the 16th century. Whilst 3/4 of its vineyards are situated in the famous appellation, 1/4 of it is just outside it. This is where the Beaucastel Coudoulet is situated. For this reason the Beaucastel Coudoulet is often referred to as the 'baby' Beaucastel. Being just outside of the 'grand' cru appellation also means it's great value as it's made with the same level of care and philosophy as the other Beaucastel range.

The Beaucastel reds are all about blending to allow the star varietal Grenache to shine with elegance and finesse. The 2013 is a blend of 40% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah and 10% Cinsault. Each variety is handpicked, fermented separately and blended after malolactic fermentation before being aged 6 months in large oak barrels. The Cotta vineyard is the first of five single vineyards owned by the estate with vines that are over 70 years old. Situated between the zones of Neive and Barbaresco, it produces wines that are full bodied and rich in polyphenol, typical of the Neive area, while its well balanced tannic structure is definitely a mark of the Barbaresco area. Using only wild yeasts, fermentation and the maceration on the skins normally takes about 25 days. What makes these wines so special is the way they are produced. The best aspect for these vines are usually on south facing slopes in order to receive the most sunlight during the day. The humidity from nearby river Bordog causes morning mist which clears into sunny afternoons creating the perfect environment for growing noble rot. This might sound gross, but this rot pierces the grapes skins causing it to shrivel up, increase in sugar content and flavour intensity. The harvest process for making the best Tokaji is very labour intensive. As the grapes rot at different speeds throughout the estate, they must handpicked in batches. The grapes are picked berry by berry and are collected in puttony (Hungarian for buckets). Traditionally the wines were labelled between 3-6 puttonyos to indicate the number of aszú buckets added to the grape must.

Whereas nowadays the puttonyos number can correspond to the amount of residual sugar in the wine, Disznóko adhere to the ancient method; 5 wooden hods of 55 pounds of dried grapes are macerated with 136 litres of base wine before the resulting Aszú then ferments at a snail's pace (for as long as it takes). It then ages for 2 years in used Sauternes barrels.

Tastes Like?

This is a fabulously intricate wine of awesome aromatic complexity - it's chock-a-block with fresh and dried fruit flavours, earthy spices and floral honey notes. Not a country that's commonly associated with wine today but one that has been producing wines for more than 30 centuries. The estate is situated in Bekka Valley, Lebanon's most important farming region, 30km east of Beirut. Established in 1930, the winery has come a long way and still remains very much a family run business.
The Musar red is their flagship red, it's a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan. The grapes have always been organically farmed from mature bushvines, handpicked and fermented with native yeasts. Ambient yeast adds more character to a wine and helps to highlight its sense of place compared to commercial yeasts used for their predictability and being generally 'less risky'. But this is not Musar's philosophy. Serge Hochar believes a “Good wine should be dangerously enjoyable. I want to make a wine that troubles me.”
6 mths after harvest each variety is racked off into separate French oak barrels to mature for 12 months. In the second year after harvest the wines are blended and placed back in cement tanks before being bottled in the third year. Bottles are aged for another 3-4 years before release. In 2010 they started producing Fondillón, the sweet Monastrell from the zone, so the riper bunches from these vineyards are kept for the Fondillón, which has had an effect on the dry Monastrell wines: more freshness and less overripe notes. This wine has six months in used 500-liter barrels and a variable time in vat, between six months and one year. The 2014 feels very tender, it has the esparto grass austerity of the stony vineyards with the chalky soils and a myriad of Mediterranean herbs. They used some stems for the fermentation, which added a fine thread and makes it subtly textured. It has the dusty tannins and the saline tastiness of the limestone soils. It represents a superb value and a great introduction to the Monastrell from Alicante; the price is hard to believe. ”
Luis Guitterez, eRobertParker.com, January 2016

Grape: Garnacha (50%), Tempranillo (40%), Graciano (10%)
Region: Rioja, Spain
You'll like if you like: Full bodied, exotic spicy red
Ageing Potential: Drink now 2025
Size: 750mL

Why You'll Love It:

The word exopto means 'desire' in Latin and this is certainly one of those hedonistic wines that conjures desire and is to be desired. Ironically this Spanish red is produced by Bordeaux expat, Tom Puyaubert. Ironic given the amount of noise the French have made regarding cheap, mass produced Spanish wines. His wines are however a good representation of a new wave of modern winemakers entering this country - moving away from the heavily American oaked, traditional barrel aged reds that leaves you with a mouth full of wood (rather than fruit)! The Bodegas Exopto project was created in 2003 with the hope of recovering old bush vines cultivated on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria, at over 500 metres altitude. The grenache is produced from 60 year old vines from Alfaro on the Monte Yerga (Rioja Baja), while the Tempranillo comes from the Rioja Alta. To add a splash of freshness, the grenache is fermented in concrete whilst the tempranillo is fermented in old wooden fourdre. Finally there's also 10% graciano, the 'noble' grape of this region, highly unusual to be found in a wine at this price point.
